bird
A bird's eye view of a life in flight.
Guacamaya
I was one of the ones who found the birds. Hours, days, weeks spent trudging through wretched Honduran tropical forests. Too long getting sucked dry by mosquitoes, hacking through shrubs and vinery, and the occasional close call with venomous snakes. Coiled tightly around themselves under large leaves or wrapped around thick tree branches. They were everywhere.

An Uneasy Truce
The dense forest swallowed me. The blanket of the tree canopy above blocked even the smallest sliver of light from the full moon. The dark, damp soil pounding beneath my poorly clad feet consumed my legs and feet so much, that I feared I might forever become a part of the forest. The battle between man and nature would continue in another de-evolution from body to dirt.

The Back Room
It had never occurred to me before, really. I've had blind spots like this my entire life, plus, I'm not really one to peek and pry into corners, or behind Employees Only doors. Everyone is entitled to places where they're not on display for my personal benefit, so why should I go where I don't belong?

MISSING HENRIETTA
As I stood at the kitchen sink this morning, cleaning up breakfast dishes, I enjoyed the light breeze wafting through the window and the soft rays of sunshine warming my face. Once again the day was bright and beautiful; bringing not only warmth and sunshine but an abundance of fragrances from the multitude of wildflowers blooming in the fields nearby.

A Parrot in A Poncho
One time my wife and I were at a party with some friends just before Halloween and I noticed they had all these bottles of Coronas on each of the tables with small ponchos on them for decoration. I had a hunch that one of these might be the perfect size for my Eclectus Male Parrot name Oiseau so I snagged one just for him to try on and it was a perfect fit!

My Feathered Colleague
Working from home for the last 18 months has been interesting to say the least. I started working from home regularly in March 2020, when COVID-19 made its appearance in Calgary, AB. It was a scary time. My 11-year-old daughter at the time didn’t leave the house for an entire 6 weeks. We lived in a 3-bedroom apartment at that time, and no kidding, she didn’t even go outside on the balcony because she was so scared to get sick.

Hawks and Chickens
"You were a hawk raised like a chicken." Said my therapist. He'd said a lot of other things too, but that was the phrase that stuck in my head. It was a story in itself. A hawk raised as a chicken. There are folk tales with that theme, and how once the hawk sees the sky she could lift her wings and fly.
