The Law of Distraction
Much has been made of the Law of Attraction, the idea that what you think about enough will come true. I won't debate the pros and cons of this concept here, but there is a related topic that also deserves discussion: The law of distraction.

In a Year from Now: An Exercise You Can Do Right Now
I love to think about my future. I've been constantly planning and editing the picture in my head for several years now to make it fit with what I see it to be. And of course, it changes all the time. But sometimes I can get carried away or discouraged that I will never get to do something, or that I can't do it now and it has to wait. However, there are ways to feel good about your plan, but not feel too overwhelmed about what you want your life to look like. I have come up with a way to attract your ideal life into your own reality without it being too complicated. It helps me feel grounded about the coming months, years, and also the present moment, which I feel is just as important. This is how I do it:

20 Intentions for My 20th Year
Thank yourself for your strength. Instead of wallowing in your moments of weakness, thank yourself for your moments of strength and courage. Acknowledge your little successes every day. Even if all you managed to do was get yourself out of bed, it's still an accomplishment to celebrate. Simply put, life is hard. Quit setting your expectations for yourself so high. Like I said in #2, life is hard. Even if you do somehow manage to do it all, you won't be able to without losing your sanity. Engage in more positive self-talk. Moments where you look into the mirror and tell yourself, "I am so proud of you," and "You did so great today," are some of the most influential to the mind and soul. Be kinder to yourself. Go easier on yourself. You are deserving of your own love. Quit comparing yourself to others and begin comparing yourself to YOU. Nothing good comes from comparing your happiness or success to the ones of those around you. However, comparing yourself to the old you will help you to recognize progress. You are incessantly evolving. Breathe. This may seem like a no brainer, but in all seriousness, learn to slow down in the midst of the chaos and focus on the rising and falling of your chest. Appreciate the ability to inhale and exhale freely. Let go. Some will try and destroy you out of their own anger. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, and feel sorry for them instead. You may have been hurt, but you are deserving of peace. Forgive yourself. There's no use holding onto your pent up frustrations. You're going to make decisions you wish you hadn't and you're going to miss out on opportunities. Some things are inevitable, so forgive yourself for what you cannot control. Accept your timeline. Every human being's timeline in life is different. Quit thinking in the mindset that you're "early" or "late". You are neither because every moment in your life happens on your time. You will achieve your goals when your time is right. You will be successful when your time is right. Have enough dignity to be vocal when it matters most. Instead of allowing others to disrespect and degrade you, have the dignity to say in confidence, "You cannot speak to me that way." Listen to the needs of your heart, mind, and soul. They are constantly in communication with you. If they are asking you for rest, give yourself rest. If they are asking you for solitude to recharge, give yourself alone time. Don't push yourself too far. Give yourself permission... To push someone toxic away, to spend the day in solitude, to take a mental health day, to do what you need to do. It all begins with you. Worship your body. What you have and what you are is nothing less than beautiful. Whether you are changing into new clothes or soaking in the bathtub, appreciate every curve, every scar, every mole, every birthmark. This is you. Pray. When you need help, when you need strength, when you or a loved one needs healing, when you need to know someone else will be okay, pray. Remain self-aware. Self-awareness encourages growth. Recognize your emotions and behaviors. Focus on how you normally respond to situations versus how you would like to respond. Work on processing your emotions in a healthy way before reacting. Like #11, listen to what your body needs in those moments of high-stress. Give. Whether tangible or intangible, do what you do best. Give. No more apologizing. Do not apologize for the factors that are out of your control. Do not apologize because someone does not acknowledge your worth. Do not apologize to the people who do not deserve you. Instead, apologize for their inability to appreciate something good when they have it. Go. Don't give yourself anymore excuses to hold yourself back out of fear. The best moments in life happen outside of your comfort zone. Go after what you want. Go after opportunity when you see it. Go after that dream. Go after that job. Become a go-getter. Persevere. No matter how many times you get knocked back down, stand back up. Come back even stronger. Move those mountains. You've been doing it your whole life, don't give up now. Believe. Believe in yourself. Believe that you can do it. Believe that you can get yourself to where you want and need to be. Believe in your end goal. Believe in your dreams. You will get there, but it won't be easy if you don't believe you can.

Stepping Outside of Your Comfort Zone
People are always going on about the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone, which I do agree with; after all, there are the personal and professional benefits. There is a quote I refer to when thinking about comfort zones.

Dreaming Big Despite the Uncertain Course of Life
I'll travel all the countries of the world before I turn 30. I'll finish my PhD by the time I turn 25. I'll repay all my loans in the next three years so that I can finally start living the way I want. I'll go on my first solo backpacking trip as soon as I juggle to earn enough money for it. But what if I don't earn enough to wander the world? What if I have to take loans to study further and end up paying them back all my life? What if my flight crashes? What if I end up catching some deadly disease and die? What if...

Delay Isn't Denial
Ever had a plan, its execution strategy and the end result all played out in your mind? That was me back in 2007. I remember the excitement that rushed through my body when I received the letter of acceptance to study towards a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy at Rhodes University. I was on cloud nine. As the first child, I was going to be the first to sojourn another country and be the first to get a degree. That was a lot of pressure however, I was super excited

Can You Fail at Failure?
Another day, another failure, another opportunity to reflect. There have been so many times now that I have figuratively banged my head against the wall in anguish over what a colossal failure I am. Just earlier this evening I threw in the towel and committed to giving up. I gave up on writing a research project proposal that I was genuinely eager to complete. I talked myself into an absolute tizzy over all the reasons why it would go wrong, why it would be a mistake, why it would cause problems for me down the line. Funnily (or perhaps not at all), I couldn't even articulate what would actually go wrong, I just felt this impending doom that something definitely would.

The Power of the 24
We have 86,400 seconds each day to accomplish so much. Just think, the average person, Barack Obama, Beyoncé, and Bill Gates each have the same 86,400 seconds every day. Many people might have giggled at the analogy, but the first step of maximizing your day is understanding that your day can be maximized without the cost being lack of physical and mental wellbeing. Granted, the average person usually has daily tasks that are different from public figures and the average person does not have a professional or personal assistant, yet we all still have the same 24 to achieve our goals. And, the fact of the matter is that we actually experience the entire 24 hours of each day. Let’s assume the daily itinerary of a college student for example (we are easy to pick on).

New Year's Resolutions
Feb. 15, 2019: New Years Resolutions... This is something that's been on my mind for some time now. I have an issue when it comes to setting goals and actually keeping them, especially when I don't see immediate results. I am impatient, so often times when I am unable to see the progress I've been making I get discouraged and will eventually give up.
