The Birthday Hut
For as long as I can remember, I’ve visited the birthday hut. Every year on my birthday, when my parents go to sleep, I’d peek out my window, my eyes locked on the backyard grass. Waiting excitedly, my heart would skip with each blink. When suddenly, there it was. Its roof was made of layered straw, its walls wooden. And through a glassless window glowed a warm, orange light. My eyes would widen as it appeared from thin air. As to not wake my parents, I would tiptoe down the steps, although I wanted to run like the wind. Slipping out the back door, the grass would crunch beneath my feet as I approached it. The wooden door appeared to be hand carved, it’s indents sloppy. And the golden knob was scratched; long past it’s days of glimmer. It screeched as I turned it, the door creaking as it opened. The warm, comforting air wrapped around me like a hug as I stood in the doorway. In the middle of the room was a small wooden table with matching chairs for two. Towards the back of the room was a crackling fire that illuminated the hut. Over on a wooden counter stood tiny wooden jars that contained treats, ones that I would be allowed to eat each birthday. But my gift was always the best of all. And finally, dangling from the ceiling by his tail, was the birthday monster.

The Truth about Stakes
[Author's Note: At University (in the early 2000's), I took a Sociology class on the myth and symbolism of Witchcraft, and as part of the class, I ended up writing a paper on the mythology and folklore of vampires, which then lead me into a paid gig writing vampire articles for awhile. So I've decided to share these articles of vampire myth and folklore here ~ C ]

Still Waters
Hank walked his rounds like he did every night. He started in the living areas, kitchen, break rooms, and such. There were a few people in break room C, a pallid man in his mid-fifties with a coffee stain on his lab coat and a stern-looking woman with her salt and pepper hair pulled up into a tight bun, her lab coat was the very picture of tidy. She had been stirring her coffee absentmindedly as she read what he assumed were very important reports on her tablet. Neither had said a word to Hank as he moved through the cavernous break room, though the man had nodded silently to him as he passed. Hank didn’t really fault them; guns made a lot of people nervous and in his time here he had noticed that seemed to go double for the science geeks. The next few floors of his rounds were no more exciting than the first, empty labs and server rooms, followed by the engineering floors. Nothing on them but machine rooms, climate control units, oxygen scrubbers, and massive amounts of plumbing snaking around the place. After that was the part of his rounds Hank dreaded. After that was The Lake.

Space Vampire
He was looking at the night sky. It was clear, and all the stars glowed brighter than usual. The cold air blew and it brought chills with it. At first, the cold effect made sense, but then, he felt another wave, a colder wave; he remembered something. He remembered a story that his father told him when he badgered him, as kids do, to tell him something scary before going to sleep. Why something scary? He couldn't remember.

The Garden
Pam and Tony were looking at houses. They'd been looking for two weeks. Three houses a day. This was how they chose to spend their vacation. Three houses a day and not a single one was worth making an offer. At least Pam didn't think so. Tony could have lived in almost any of them; but Pam was picky. The house had to be perfect.

Angler
In the small village of Dewport, there lives a silent man who stalks about town everyday, not making a sound. People have learned to walk the opposite way and never speak to him as he walks up and down the busy streets. People of the town gawk and stare as he passes by, for even though his mouth remains shut, there is something odd about his face. His lips jut out, as though they were puckering. His jaw is set forward, so it sticks out farther than his nose. His nose itself seems nonexistent, everyone looks, trying to find it, but no one has found it yet. His eyes are glassy, foggy, and unresponsive. Yet, the weirdest part about him is the spot. The spot, as townspeople have come to call it, is a small white dot on his forehead that shines in the night. Urban legend says that he lives by the deep lake, and children who are drawn to the light of the man go missing, never to be seen again. Because of this, the whole town has come to bring themselves and their children in by sunset.

The Beal Inse
Women were bad luck on a voyage at sea. So it seemed to be true to Sophia Wainwright, daughter of Captain Bartholomew Wainwright of Ennis. She had never taken to her father’s ship or the sea itself really. Its movements made her stomach tighten in pain and there was nowhere to go. Endless days would pass with nothing to do but walk from one end of the ship to another. No matter how many quilts she sewed or how many little socks and toys she put together for the babies back home the hours would pass on slowly. She wished now to go anywhere even if it meant into the damn ocean. Tucked into the corner of her father’s study she squeezed her eyes shut as tightly as she could with hope to get some rest tonight.
