What is music and the musician that makes it so easy and fun to listen to at any given chance to listen? Music is a series of sounds and notes that come together that makes us relax or have a good time. Music is also something that lets us show our emotions much like writing and drawing does for me and others.

To read my review of Hüsker Dü's epic live album compilation, "The Living End," click here: Hüsker Dü: "The Living End Filmed in beautiful, fuzzy, 1980s black-and-white with occasional colored tints, "Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely" is a pre-emo emo video from former hardcore punks Hüsker Dü, who, like other bands, such as Beastie Boys, actually improved after changing their style. Hüsker Dü, incidentally, is my favorite band. Period.

The Pixies were the first Nirvana. They just didn't break in the same way. Okay, they weren't quite as heavy, having a sweeter tone to their guitars and less despair in their music--they seemed a play on commercially accessible surf tunes and pop music conventions, twisting them out of shape until they were the approximation of the David Lynch cinematic dreamscapes singer Black Francis claimed as his inspiration.

It's a screaming mess That television city dream Your robot's eyes gleam In my future dream And I am the prisoner. I saw D.O.A. live back in 1996, at Fountain Square Theater in Indianapolis, at a punk and indie music festival called "Hodge Podge" that was put on by the local pop-punk kings Sloppy Seconds. It was a great time and D.O.A. killed it, closing the show with a jam session with Zeni Geva, the little Japanese noise dude who climbed a Marshall Stack at the end--I was afraid the dude was going to jump. "Bright flash of steel, descending from above, addressed, "From Ronald Reagan to Russia, with love!" - Toxic Reasons I first saw this video clip on a Black Flag home video called "Live At Target." It was part of a "Coming Attractions" and was one of the best things on the video (which also featured clips from X, Iggy Pop, Bad Brains, and Survival Research Laboratories--Eighties countercultural and punk rock weirdoes, in other words). That was maybe the early 1990s, and this clip was already a decade old then, I think.

Sh*t I Could Watch Over and Over and Do # 4
This NOFX video goes way the f*ck back, to the era of the mid-Nineties, when I was young and had a circle of friends who all dyed their hair but rarely washed it. It was on a Fat Wreck Chords video sampler, and the sampler had this and "Stickin' in My Eye" on it, as well as some other great stuff from bands like Lagwagon and Pennywise. The video reminds me of the olden days of yore, and you have to love the way the skacore breakdown gives the middle of the song a kind of easygoing, friendly vibe, right before shoving a size-twelve Doc Marten boot up your ass.

When I was about thirteen, the Beastie Boys were the baddest motherf*ckers to ever pick up a mic and go boom. Everybody in the State Adolescent Unit/dungeon I was living at LOVED License to Ill, and it was the most popular AUDIOCASSETTE TAPE (!) on the ward, much passed around and quoted. A video that turns me on immensely, it's like Santos and Tura Satana got wild together after scarfing some Mexican mushrooms on the set of Robot Vs. the Aztec Mummy. Rob Zombie has always been a near-total badass in everything and every way. How could ANYONE not appreciate the man who brought us a cinematic landmark like House of a Thousand Corpses? I'd have posted this in "Beat" but tthen I'd have to blather on about it for six hundred words. And I think you rather get the point.
