Do We Really Need Things Any Faster?

Looking At The Trajectory Of The World From A Different Angle

By Dr. Cody Dakota Wooten, DFM, DHM, DAS (hc)Published about 10 hours ago 3 min read

Speed wins...

Or so we have been told at least.

There is some truth to this idea, don't get me wrong.

If you look at a race...

Whoever gets to the finish first is generally the winner.

If we look at our world today...

This seems to be something that pushes us forward.

Tech is perhaps the greatest demonstration of this idea.

Cellphones showed us the power of faster communication.

Google showed us the power of being able to get information more quickly.

There is power that exists with speed.

However...

It begs an interesting question.

Is speed always the answer?

There is this really old story that you have probably heard about, known as...

The tortoise and the hare.

You remember...

The one where the fast hare is beaten in a race by the slow tortoise.

Is there a point...

Where becoming faster...

Is no longer a real advantage?

This becomes even more interesting when we begin to look at technology like AI...

Where the claim is that we will create AI Agents...

That do what we ask them to do...

Faster.

But do we really need this?

Is faster what we need more of?

I would argue that...

Despite being able to get things so much faster...

In many ways...

Many aspects of our society have become worse.

Look at the state of our health...

It is atrocious.

Look at the impact of our businesses...

They seem to cause more harm than good.

We are able to do things faster...

But as humans...

We are doing extremely terribly when it comes to the overall quality of our lives.

In many ways...

In the speed of our lives...

We seem to be missing something that is incredibly important...

And it is causing us to collapse...

In some cases, literally die.

Now we want to speed that up?

If a car is headed straight for a brick wall...

Is the best thing to do to step on the gas?

I think most people would say no.

If you do not want to crash...

You might want to hit the brakes.

When we look at our society today...

In many ways...

It does look like we are headed directly for a wall...

And the solutions we are creating tend to say that we should just go faster.

But the faster you go...

The less you see...

The easier it is to miss things.

Now, if you're driving on a highway that is designed for this specifically, it may not be a problem.

But what happens when we are going so fast that we no longer choose what we want to purchase?

If we just tell an AI agent to purchase something...

Who is to say that the AI stops being impartial...

And begins to create monopolies?

Or what happens when the companies it goes to purchase from...

Decide they need to decrease their quality...

But you never hear about it because you are no longer paying attention?

We have already seen this happen in our food systems...

And we want to go faster?

When we no longer look at the research that is being done...

Who is to say that the research will not be purposefully manipulated?

Especially because we know this is already happening in the research industry.

What if the manipulations...

Cause more harm than good?

This, too, is already happening.

So is the solution really to make things even faster?

Or do we need another solution?

Perhaps the wisest thing we can do...

Is actually slow down...

And gain wisdom.

Perhaps in our world...

Things are already fast enough...

And the solutions we need...

Require us to take time...

Figure out how to ask better questions...

And pay attention to the long-term impact we are creating.

If the trends continue as they are...

I believe that we will end up doing far more damage than good...

And people will become blind as to what is killing them...

Literally.
