“A soap impression of his wife
That he ate and donated to the National Trust”
- John Lennon “Happiness is a Warm Gun”

6:30 a.m.
60 minutes to drive 31 miles
Granola bar breakfast
Free coffee at 8 boils my stomach
>

From parking lot to the building’s front door
4 blocks, 335 steps
Sometimes a 45-degree grade uphill
>

Now breakfast is free
Wednesdays only
Senator’s leftovers
Staffers and state troopers
Line up like pigs at the trough
Scrambling for slop
>

When there’s leftover
Chick-fil-A
From some other event

But still free
>

But it still seems nice
And I deuce upstairs
In the official bathroom
>
Tiled in polished granite
It’s shared by the House and Senate
Just off their chamber floors
>
Usually Wednesday
At noon
I go in quietly and wait
As they get out of session
And walk in
Smelling what I’ve given them
