Stop Wasting Weekends Cleaning Your Pool – What Finally Worked for Me

From weekend frustration to a simpler, more relaxed way of maintaining a clean pool.

Last summer here in Australia, I realised something a bit frustrating.

I had always imagined owning a pool would mean relaxing weekends, quick dips after work, and spending more time outdoors. Instead, it turned into a routine of cleaning, scrubbing, and trying to keep the water clear.

Every Saturday morning, I’d grab the skimmer, vacuum the pool, brush the walls… and somehow, by Sunday, it didn’t even look like I had done anything.

If you own a pool, you probably know exactly what I mean.

When Pool Maintenance Starts Feeling Like a Chore

At first, I didn’t think much of it. A bit of cleaning is expected, right?

But over time, it started to feel never-ending.

There were days when I’d clean the pool in the morning, only to find leaves, dust, and debris back in the water by evening. Windy days were the worst. It felt like the environment was working against me.

And it wasn’t just the visible mess. Even when the pool looked clean, the water sometimes turned slightly cloudy a day or two later. That meant more chemicals, more testing, and more time spent fixing things.

I didn’t mind the work at the beginning, but eventually, it started taking away from the whole point of having a pool in the first place.

Trying the Usual Cleaning Methods

Like most people, I started with the standard options.

Manual vacuuming worked, but it took time—and honestly, it got tiring pretty quickly. I also tried a basic suction cleaner, thinking it would make things easier.

It helped a little, but not as much as I expected.

It would miss corners, get stuck occasionally, and struggle with finer debris. I still had to step in regularly, which kind of defeated the purpose.

At that point, I realised I needed something that could actually reduce the effort, not just shift it around.

Looking for a Smarter Way

That’s when I started looking into other options.

I kept coming across robotic pool cleaners. At first, I wasn’t sure if they were worth it or just another expensive gadget. But the idea of something that could clean the pool on its own was definitely appealing.

After spending some time reading about how they work, it started to make sense.

They don’t rely on the pool’s system. They move around independently, clean different surfaces, and filter debris on their own. It sounded like exactly what I needed—but I was still a bit skeptical.

What I Noticed After Switching

After giving it a try, the biggest difference for me was simple: time.

Instead of spending hours cleaning, I was just setting it up and letting it do its thing. It didn’t mean zero effort, but it was a huge improvement.

I also noticed the pool stayed cleaner for longer. Fine dust and small particles—which were easy to miss before—were being picked up more consistently.

One thing I didn’t expect was how much less I had to think about cleaning. It just became part of the routine instead of something I had to plan my weekend around.

Are They Perfect? Not Really

To be fair, no solution is completely perfect.

Robotic cleaners can be more expensive upfront, and you still need to clean the filters and maintain them occasionally. But compared to manual cleaning every weekend, it felt like a reasonable trade-off.

I also realised that not every model is the same, so it’s worth doing a bit of research before choosing one.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, I think the biggest shift wasn’t just the cleaner itself—it was changing how I approached pool maintenance.

Instead of constantly reacting to a messy pool, I found a way to manage it more consistently with less effort.

Now, weekends feel a lot closer to what I originally imagined when I decided to get a pool.

Maybe your experience is different, but if you’ve been spending more time cleaning than enjoying your pool, it might be worth exploring alternatives that actually give you some of that time back.
