I had this big smile at the end.

You found the beat.

Mr. Holland’s Opus is a 1995 film. Composer Glenn Holland is offered a job as a high school music teacher. He doesn’t see any interest in it until he becomes more involved with his students. Through his teachings, he inspires his students to see more beyond music.

Mr. Holland’s Opus is an empowering music education movie that I wish I had discovered sooner. I wanted to applaud when it concluded. This film has several poignant messages about music, educators, and learning to overcome disabilities.

Richard Dreyfuss won a Best Actor award for his commendable performance as Glenn Holland. Dreyfuss looks so different in the film that I didn’t recognize him. Glenn Holland reflects all the hardworking teachers who have created a voice for their students.

Glenn is both human and flawed, which is what makes him so fascinating. Dreyfuss displays powerful emotions in several scenes. Music changes Glenn for the better once he realizes how his teachings influence his students.

Mr. Holland’s Opus stars a talented cast of supporting actors, including Glenne Headly, Jay Thomas, Jean Louise Kelly, William H. Macy, Alicia Witt, Terrence Howard, the late Olympia Dukakis, and many more.

I was surprised by Jean Louise Kelly, who played Glenn’s student, Rowena. The only movie I have seen Kelly in is Uncle Buck (1989). I would never have known that she has a beautiful singing voice. They create distinct personalities and genuine relationships.

The story is paced well. It takes several unexpected directions, like the revelation of Glenn’s son, Cole’s (Anthony Natale) hearing disability. For its time, the film depicts a positive representation of deaf culture. Every actor who portrayed a deaf character was deaf in real life.

Stephen Herek directed an uplifting film. He was deeply moved by the screenplay when he first read it. His direction is understated but effective. Herek skillfully handles the passage of time, using subtle visual and cultural cues - changes in music, fashion, and classroom dynamics.

Nobody ever knows what’s going to happen in life. This is a film about change, growth, and evolution. Glenn is tested on several occasions, but mostly with his tolerance. His growing relationship with his son is heartwarming. It’s an example of how we can better our relationships.

The music featured throughout the film plays a crucial role in its storytelling. Since the story spans multiple decades, the soundtrack reflects the evolution of popular music, from classical compositions to rock and roll.

Music is a language of its own, and it brings people together. I never used to listen to music, but over the last five years, I have been attending more concerts. Music has a unique story in its lyrics.

This movie is a positive representation of the school’s arts programs. Students need these programs, especially now. I grew up a theater and chorus student in school, and I have no idea where I would be without them. According to sources, this film became a cultural touchstone, inspiring conversations about the importance of keeping music and arts in school.

The finale is moving and unforgettable. Teachers make a difference in the world. I appreciate the teachers I’ve had throughout my life who motivated me to continue growing my passion. Mr. Holland’s Opus is a powerful message about legacy and the unexpected paths life can take.

I had this big smile at the end. I love when films do that. This is a heartfelt and inspiring film that makes you appreciate life. Keep Mr. Holland’s Opus in the mainstream. Find it streaming on Disney+.
